Keweenaw County, Michigan

Keweenaw County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Eagle River.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, extends in the northeast of the Keweenaw Peninsula Peninsula in Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes in and has an area of 15,452 square kilometers, of which 14.051 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered to the south by the Houghton County. Apart from the Keweenaw Peninsula includes the further north to Isle Royale Keweenaw County.

History

Keweenaw County was formed in 1861 from parts of Houghton County. It was named after the Indian word gakiiwe - wewaning.

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,301 people in Keweenaw County; there were counted 998 households and 604 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.0 percent white, 3.5 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 0.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.8 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 998 households out of which 20.9 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.6 percent were married couples living together, 5.7 percent were single mothers and 39.4 percent were non-families. 35.8 percent of all households and 17.4 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.76 persons.

22.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent 18 to 24 years 21.3 percent between 25 and 44, 29.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 20.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 116.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were statistically 104.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 28,140, and the median income for a family $ 36,758. Males have a median income of $ 27,165, women $ 21,667. The per capita income was $ 16,769. 7.4 percent of families and 12.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
