Keweenaw County, Michigan

Keweenaw County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Eagle River.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northwest of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, extends in the northeast of the Keweenaw Peninsula Peninsula in Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes in and has an area of ​​15,452 square kilometers, of which 14.051 square kilometers is water area. History

Keweenaw County was formed in 1861 from parts of Houghton County. It was named after the Indian word gakiiwe - wewaning.
