Kexi

Kexi is a free integrated database management application as part of Calligra, which is to close the gap between tables ( Calc) and professional database solutions. The program is similar in operation and behavior of very strong Microsoft Access and also provides no professional knowledge of databases quickly respectable results.

History

The work on Kexi was started when it was realized a lack of free software solutions with similar functionality, such as beat it Microsoft Access, FoxPro, Oracle Forms or FileMaker. Kexi is part of KOffice, which since 2003 were added many contributions of OpenOffice Polska. OpenOffice Polska also offers a Kexi demo for Windows systems to download, which could be, however, currently only offered free of charge. In future, the Windows version will be offered free of charge. Kexi also runs on Linux and Unix, Mac OS X (via Fink) and on Solaris. After version 1.6 of KOffice Kexi been removed from the software package. In version 2.2 it was included in the package for a revision of the user interface again.

With version 2.4 Kexi is removed from KOffice and Calligra Suite instead shipped with.

Functions

Kexi can access different database server such as MySQL or PostgreSQL. If SQLite used the generated SQLite database can be edited using any other SQLite program. Besides tables and queries, forms for entering and retrieving data are possible. In addition, simple reports are possible. Small scripts are possible using Python or Ruby. Support for macros is in preparation. Since all database objects, including tables, queries and forms that are stored in a single database file, which facilitates the sharing and exchange of existing databases.
