Khami

Khami is a ruined site in the southwest of Zimbabwe's five kilometers west of Bulawayo.

The village was founded in the 15th century, when Great Zimbabwe, was leaving the old power center of the Monomotapa Empire, and its focus shifted to the vicinity of Mazowetals north. Since then Khami was the center of Torwa state which competed with the Mutapa state. Finds of objects produced in China or Europe show that the place was an important commercial center. In the 17th century, the center of the state shifted Torwa - eastward into the Danangombe is 80 km away. Soon after, the power over to the Changamire Dynasty that ruled until 1831.

Today remnants of the town consist of a palace complex, which was on a hill above the settlement, as well as the remains of stone walls and terraces. These terraces are compared to Great Zimbabwe as an innovation as ornamental stone formations.

The place was declared in 1986 a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
