Khan el-Khalili

The Khan el- Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي, DMG Han al - Halili, often in English transliteration Khan el -Khalili ) is a Souk / bazaar in Old Cairo.

The west of the Saiyidna -el -Husayn Mosque location of the market is considered the largest in Africa, was established on the site of a former Mamluk cemetery in the 14th century as a caravanserai and Handelshof. The name comes from its owner, the Emir Dsch (ah) arkas al - Khalili, back. Later, during the Ottoman rule, the market rather than " Turkish Bazaar " was known ( a term that is sometimes still used today ).

Currently impressed the market with its enormous variety of small streets, shops, coffee houses and squares. In many places the Egyptian hookah ( shisha ) is smoked. The overall ensemble offers the spaciousness of Khan El Khalili. Also you guessed the former grandeur of the old trading houses.

In the years 2005 and 2009 targeted terrorist attacks were perpetrated on the market. A number of deaths ( in the first attack ) as injured (especially the second attack), it was to complain about.
