Khanabad

Province

Khanabad ( Pashto / Dari: خان آباد ) is a city in the Afghan province of Kunduz with, according to official figures, about 35,000 inhabitants and the capital of the district of the same name.

Khanabad is primarily a traditional bazaar city with poorly developed infrastructure. Thanks to the vast agricultural catchment area and its surplus production, the city has one of the largest grain markets of Afghanistan.

Geography

Khanabad is located in northeast Afghanistan, about 270 kilometers north of Kabul, 25 km west of Kunduz in an altitude of 496 m.

History

From 1888 to 1937 Khanabad was the largest and most leading city of the Qataghan. The relocation of the provincial administration after Baglan because of that risk of malaria meant a sensitive loss of function.
