Khanaqin

Chanaqin (Arabic خانقين, DMG Ḫānaqīn, Kurdish خانه قين Xaneqîn ) is a city close to the autonomous Kurdistan region in northeastern Iraq in Diyala province, near the Iranian border. The population is estimated at 175,000 inhabitants, but there has been due to the Iraq policy under Saddam Hussein no reliable figures. Kurds see the city as Kurdish.

Chanaqin is drained by the river Helwan, which has played a significant role in the cultivation of the land as well as the expression of a strong rural society. The bridge dates from the Sasanian period. Without objection by the Iraqi government but this proposal was drained from the Iranian side, causing devastating consequences for people, animals and plants with it.

Name and history

Chanaqins original name was Du- Khanag ( دوخانگ ), which was Persian and The Two houses meant. After the Arabs had conquered these areas, many names were Arabized. Thus the word you ( dt: Two ) was replaced by the Arabic dual- ayn. This was from Du- Khanag Khanag - ayn and Khanaqin eventually.

With the Muslim conquest there was a battle in the area Chanaqins. It is mentioned by Ibn al -Faqih. Under Arab rule Chanaqin was an insignificant town and a stop on the way from Baghdad to Khorasan. Also wine is described.

Population

In the region around Chanaqin Kurds form the majority of the population, they speak predominantly Kurdish dialects Kelhuri and Gorani. During the systematic Arabization of the Iraqi regime Arabs were settled in the city, the Kurds were resettled in the south of Iraq or have fled to the Kurdish-controlled north. After the fall of Saddam Hussein want the residents that the city is connected to the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan. This will be determined by a referendum. Khanaqin is populated by many Kurdish Stämmem as the Arkewazi, the Talabani, the Jaff, the Dalewi, the Bajalan, the Abdul Rahman, the Gimur and Suremeri.

After Kirkuk Chanaqin is the second largest city with the oil industry in the north of Iraq, there is an oil refinery and a pipeline to Baghdad.

The Naft Khana oil field supplies up to 16,000 barrels of oil per day. The oil field reaches purely in Iran and is therefore also used by Iran. In March 2006, the oil production facility has been fixed so that the level was reached again before the Iraq war. Currently, the oil is brought to the refinery Al Daura by trucks.

In Chanaqin the construction of a refinery is provided, which is to process 20,000 barrels of oil per day locally.
