Khandyga

Chandyga (Russian Хандыга; Yakut Хаандыга ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) in Russia with 6638 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The village is located some 300 km as the crow east of the Republic capital of Yakutsk. It is located on the right bank of the largest Lena - Aldan creek, a good 10 km below the confluence of the Eastern Chandyga ( Vostochnaya Chandyga ) and above the influx of Amga.

Chandyga is the administrative center of the raion Tomponski. The settlement is the seat and only town in the municipality ( gorodskoje posselenije ) Possjolok Chandyga.

History

The settlement was founded in 1938 at a pier at Aldan as a starting point for the Kolyma highway in the direction of Magadan. Until 1954 it was the site of various labor camps in the Gulag system, including the Janstroi - bearing.

1954, the city administrative center of the enlarged, founded in 1931 Tomponski was rayon. Since 1957 Chandyga has the status of an urban-type settlement.

Traffic

Chandyga is located on the highway R504 Kolyma, Magadan connects with the Nizhny Bestjach at Yakutsk (previously M56, number until 2017 alternatively in use). A bridge over the Aldan does not exist, instead a ferry some 30 km downstream, in the field of Amgamündung. Was started in 2009 with the construction of a road which is to lead the right Aldanufer upwards over Dschebariki - Haya to Eldikan. Currently, the more than 50 km long section to Dschebariki - Haya is under construction, in the course of a nearly 400 m long bridge over the Eastern Chandyga was opened in September 2011.

The Chandyga small airport ( ICAO code UEMH ) is located about 70 km northeast of the village near the settlement Tjoply Kliuch on the right bank of the Eastern Chandyga.
