Khanty Ocean

The Khanty- Mansi Ocean was in Earth's history, a sister of the Iapetus Ocean. It existed from the Precambrian to the Silurian, about 800 Ma - 600 Ma according to another theory - by no later than 417 Ma.

Formation

Ma ago, about 1000, all land masses of the earth were united to the supercontinent Rodinia. The only global ocean called Panthalassa.

Rodinia, the exact shape and size to date is controversial, broke before 800 Ma through the power of convection currents in the upper mantle in several continental blocks.

While the large Gondwana and the smaller fragments Baltica and Laurentia young Iapetus Ocean limited, the Khanty- Mansi Ocean was the maritime area between Baltica and another drift of Gondwana to the north part - Sibiria.

In another model of historical geology first broke before 750 Ma, the smaller supercontinent Proto - Laurasia ( it included Laurentia, Baltica and Sibiria ) of Pannotia from and formed a strait - the Proto - Tethys - in the northeast. The Panthalassaozean limited him in the north, the Palaeotethys the south and east. Only about 600 Ma broke this into its constituents and formed including the Khanty- Mansi Ocean.

However, both models must be regarded as unsafe because so far there are few available high-quality paleomagnetic investigation results of Sibiria from the period, in question.

Closure

The closure was the time of the early phase of acadischen Gebirgsbildungsära and education Euramerikas by the collision of the island arc Sakmarischen with Baltica in the Silurian. At the northeastern end of the arc a new ocean, the Ural Ocean was born. It was not until about 70 million years later, all continental blocks, terranes, volcanic island arc and cratons had again joined forces with the great southern Gondwana supercontinent Pangaea to last global.
