Khao Lak

Khao Lak ( Thai: เขา หลัก, pronunciation: [ kăo.làk ] - for example: Pole Mountain ) is a mountain on the west coast of Thailand near the Andaman Sea in the district ( Amphoe ) of Takua Pa, Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand. However acquaintance is the same holiday region, which is located across from him on the coast, about 60 kilometers north of Phuket.

Economy

The main industry of the area is tourism, which led to a major expansion of tourism infrastructure since the late 1980s. Khao (mountain ) Lak is thus a tourist designation of a relatively young vacation area. From Phuket to Takua Pa to pull seemingly endless sandy beaches. Larger towns there is not. Capital of the Khao Lak region is the small village of La Ohn. Here is the well-known Nang Thong Beach.

Traffic

The distance from Bangkok is a 10- hour bus. The nearest airport is Phuket International Airport.

Tourism

Tourist "Highlights" are the beaches of Nang Thong, Bang Niang and Kukak. The settlements of the accommodations on back of Lamru port ( the port of departure to the Similan Islands ) up to Cape Coral.

Khao Lak is also the starting point for day trips to the dive sites in the Similan Islands, which lie about 70 miles off the coast. Also, the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province is visited Khao Lak much.

The tsunami of 26 December 2004

In Germany Khao Lak attracted media attention because of the severe devastation in Thailand who wreaked the tsunami of 26 December 2004. The region is a popular destination for European tourists (share 80 %). There were several hundred tourists were killed. The damage was repaired until the onset of the tourist season in the fall of 2006.
