Kharg Island

Kharg (Persian خارگ charg ), also Kharg, is an inhabited island in the Persian Gulf and part of Iran. It is located about 25 kilometers off the coast of mainland at Bushehr and is about 6 km long and 4 km wide, the population is about 10,000. The island is 55 km west of Bushehr and 35 km south of Ganaveh.

History

The island was first inhabited by Nestorians. 1756 the island from Holland was occupied with two ships and 50 soldiers.

Economy

The island is located near several oil fields and is of strategic importance. It has an oil terminal and airfield. An oil tanker can dock terminal from four sides. In the seventies Kharg was considered the most modern oil terminal in the world. The island had a fresh water production plant and an agricultural use greenhouse to supply the inhabitants of Kharg.

During the First Gulf War, the plants were severely damaged by Iraqi air strikes. A recovery of oil production is from the Iranian government now (? When?) Supported again.
