Kharkov Governorate

The government Kharkov (Russian Харьковская губерния / Char ' kovskaja Gubernija, Ukrainian Харківська губернія / Charkiwska hubernija ) was a 1835-1923 existing government ( Gubernija / губерния ) of the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. Capital of the province with a population of 2,509,811 (1897 ) (46 inhabitants / km ²) was the city of Kharkov ( Kharkiv Ukr ).

Geography

The government was in the Sloboda Ukraine in the northeast of present-day Ukraine and had an area of ​​54,495 km ². It bordered on the west by the province of Poltava, in the northwest of the province of Chernigov, in the north of the Kursk province, in the northeast of the province of Voronezh Oblast to the east of the Don Army and to the south by the province Jekaterinoslaw. The government included roughly the territory of the present Oblast Kharkiv, Luhansk Oblast to the north of and Donetsk Oblast and the southern part of the Oblast Sumy.

Population

In 1897, the province had 2,492,316 inhabitants. Of these, 2,009,411 Little Russians ( Ukrainians ), 440 936 Russians, 12,650 Jews, 10,258 White Russians as well as smaller groups of Poles, Germans and Tartars.
