Khasan (urban-type settlement)

Khasan (Russian Хасан ) is an urban-type settlement in Primorsky Krai of the Russian Far East with 742 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Khasan is located in Rajon Khasan, which includes the south-western tip of the Primorye region and is the southernmost settlement in the Russian Far East, near the settlement are the Khasan and the border river Tumangang ( Tumen ).

In the middle of the river just south of Khasan lies the border triangle of Russia, North Korea, People's Republic of China, so it is the only Russian settlement on the 17 km long border with North Korea.

History

The railway station of Khasan, the border railway station of the railway line Baranowski - Khasan is Rason, was built in 1951. 1959 was the settlement of Khasan as the residence of the employed on the railway construction workers. Station and settlement Chassan got their name from the nearby Khasan, which has become known in Russia by those referred to as Battle of Khasan border skirmishes between troops of the Soviet Union and Japan (as well as Manchukuo ) in 1938. In 1983 Chassan received the status of an urban-type settlement. The railway line to North Korea has lost since the collapse of the Soviet Union in importance. The number of trains that pass Chassan is now very low. In 2005, about 10,000 travelers were only counted, the freight has also declined. However, the Russian Railways is planning a renovation of the va ailing on the Korean side route as part of a Trans-Korean Railway Mainline.
