Khiva (also Khiva Khiva or; Cyrillic Хива ) is an oasis town in north- western Uzbekistan in the province Xorazm with 55 568 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005). The city is located west of the Amu Darya to the ancient Silk Road. It has textile industry (including carpets) and historic buildings. Khiva was formerly the capital of the Khanate of Khiva in Khorezm. Khiva is a city and also the capital of an eponymous district.

History

Attractions

Worth seeing are the numerous monuments from the glorious past of the city, especially the palace Tash Hauli, a masterpiece of oriental architecture. The minaret Kalta Minor was built in 1852 and should be the highest of the Islamic world with over 70 m once, but never got beyond the height of 26 m.

Since 1967, Khiva is a museum city, since 1990, the old town Itchan -Kala is under protection of UNESCO and thus belongs to the world cultural heritage of humanity.
