Khlong Luang District

Amphoe Khlong Luang ( Thai: อำเภอ คลองหลวง ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) with the homonymous town ( Khlong Luang - Thai: เทศบาล เมือง คลองหลวง ) of Pathum Thani province in central Thailand.

Geography

Neighbouring districts are (from north clockwise) Bang Pa In and Wang Noi Ayutthaya province, Nong Suea Thanyaburi, Mueang Sam Khok Pathum Thani and the province of Pathum Thani.

Religion

In Tambon Khlong Sam of Amphoe Khlong Luang Wat Phra Dhammakaya is the, the largest temple in Thailand. He is the center of the same name, internationally popular sect that their World Dhammakaya Centre has here. Landmark of Wat is the huge golden chedi, which is occupied with a million individual Buddha figures ( 300,000 and 700,000 outside inside). Due to its unusual appearance, it is also termed as a UFO Temple. The grounds of the religious community includes more than 400 acres. Here lived 2008 800 monks, 300 novices, 150 male and 500 female lay.

Traffic

Through the district run the following major roads:

  • The Phahonyothin Highway ( Thai: ถนน พหลโยธิน ), as the National Road 1 ( Thai: ทางหลวง แผ่นดิน หมายเลข 1) connects the capital Bangkok with northern Thailand and Isaan.
  • The Outer Bangkok Ring Road ( National Road 9, Thai: ทางหลวง พิเศษ หมายเลข 9), a highway that serves as a bypass road for Bangkok.

History

Originally this area was a part of the district Bang Wai, which was managed by Mueang Thanyaburi. In the Ayutthaya period, this area was dominated by lowland forests. As the Kingdom of Ayutthaya was destroyed by Burmese troops in 1767, some of the surviving troops had withdrawn to the area.

After the population had increased the agricultural areas were extended to at Thung Luang (now in the district Thanyaburi ) approach. King Chulalongkorn ( Rama V ) ordered the Rangsit Canal ( Khlong Rangsit ) to build, to ensure the irrigation of agricultural land in the area Thung Luang and Bang Wai. After the canal was completed, the government changed the name of the district in Khlong Luang to remember the fact King Chulalongkorn.

Economy

In Amphoe Khlong Luang, at the Phahonyothin Road, is the Thai Mint.

Administrative divisions

Amphoe Khlong Luang is divided into seven communities ( tambon), which in turn in 106 village communities ( Muban ) are divided. The Tambon Khlong are simply numbered as 1 to 7.

There are two cities ( thesaban Mueang ), Khlong Luang ( Thai: เทศบาล เมือง คลองหลวง ) and Khlong Tha ( Thai: เทศบาล เมืองท่า โขลง ). Both extend over parts of Khlong Nueng and Khlong Song.

The remaining five Tambons are each formed by a management organization ( " Tambon Administrative Organization" - TAO, Thai: องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล ) managed.
