Khlong

As Khlong (also Klong; Thai: คลอง ) the channels are designated to serve on the central plain of Thailand as a transport route. In particular, in the capital Bangkok, they served for centuries as a way to work as a floating marketplace and ultimately for disposal of feces.

In the context of construction some Khlongs were filled, this led, among other things to better, more sanitary conditions in the city. But were mainly the small Khlongs have been used for feces disposal, filled in and replaced by sewage pipes. The transfer of freight traffic on the roads these days leads to an endless traffic jam in Bangkok and the resulting air pollution. In Thonburi and Bangkok district, there are still some major Khlongs.

Although in the densely populated Thailand Khlong each is inhabited, the Khlongs play only a minor economic role - tourism is seen as the biggest factor. Along the Khlongs there are many potteries, lotus and orchid farms, which you can visit with a boat trip. The usual in former times " floating markets " ( Thai: Talat Nam ) exist today hardly, the only large, in Damnoen Saduak situated 100 kilometers from Bangkok floating market is frequented almost exclusively by tourists. Another floating market is located in Amphawa. This is only open on weekends.
