Province

Khon Kaen ( Thai ขอนแก่น ) is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Khon Kaen province and the Khon Kaen in the northeast region of Thailand, Isan. Khon Kaen is one of four cities in Northeast Thailand and one of the most important economic, cultural, educational and transportation centers in the region.

Location

Khon Kaen is located in the northeast on the edge a little verdant karst level, the Khorat Plateau, and the fertile area, which adjoins the north. The city is approximately 380 line kilometers ( 449 kilometers by road ) from the capital, Bangkok, has an airport and lies on the railway line Bangkok - Nong Khai ( border with Laos). In addition, the highways Thanon Mittraphap lead past (Highway 2) and the Thailand Route 12 (Highway 12) at the site. There are regular bus services to all major cities in Central, North and Northeast of Thailand.

Khon Kaen is to Nakhon Ratchasima, the most important commercial center in Isan. Here are one of the largest and leading universities in Northeast Thailand, Khon Kaen University with about 40,000 students, a by Campus Rajamangala University of Technology Isan with Faculties of Engineering and vocational education, as well as an offshoot of the Thai - German Technical Institute. The textile industry (especially silk) is an industry of some importance.

History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as excavations and show signs of settlement. History occurs Khon Kaen with the Dvaravati period ( about 8 to 11 century) in the spotlight. After that, the area was ruled by the Khmer empire of Angkor.

The city was founded in 1789 under the name Ban Bueng Bon as the fourth colony of the Lao Kingdom of Champasak in the basin of the Chi River. Its first inhabitants came from Müang Suwannaphum in the present province of Roi Et Champasak at the time was a vassal principality of Siam. The original location of the city marked the temple Phra That Kham Kaen, about 30 kilometers from the present city of location. Soon broke away from Khon Kaen Champasak and took on direct relations with the Siamese crown. The present town center in the mid- 1960s created, according to a plan of the dictatorial Prime Minister Sarit Thanarat, the Khon Kaen wanted to make the unofficial capital of the Northeast region. Sarit had grown even in Isan and has engaged in the development of the region. He was also the founding of the University of Khon Kaen operated, the first university in the Northeast and in general one of the first universities outside Bangkok. 1964 was connected Khon Kaen on the Thanon Mittraphap, the first drivable in all weather highway to the North East with Bangkok.   • National Museum Khon Kaen ( Thai: พิ พ ธ ภัณฑ สถาน แห่ง ชาติ ขอนแก่น ) - with the Bronze Age finds from Ban Chiang, some of which are more than 5000 years old. One section shows objects from the Dvaravati period ( Buddha statues, commemorative plaques and jewelry ). In the courtyard several interesting decorated with reliefs Bai Sema can also be seen from the Dvaravati period.   • Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon ( Thai: พระ มหาธาตุ แก่น นคร ) - The 9- storey stupa at Wat Nong Waeng ( วัด หนอง แวง ), hence " Phra That Nong Waeng " ( พระ ธาตุ หนอง แวง ) called, located in the southeast of the city.
