Khoren I.

Khoren I (. Paroyan Mesrob, Armenian Խորեն Ա Բարոյան, * November 24, 1914 in Nicosia, † February 9, 1983 in Antelias ) was a Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia ' of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

After his schooling in Cyprus, he entered the Seminary of Antelias in Catholicosate of Cilicia. In 1937 he was ordained as a celibate priest and was named Khoren. In 1947, he received episcopal ordination and directed in 1951 the Armenian Prelature of Lebanon. In 1963 he was chosen as successor by the late Catholicos Zareh I, and sought the quarrel with Echmiadzin by a meeting with the Catholicos Vazken I. Jerusalem enclosed. His tenure is characterized by active construction and maintenance of ecumenical relations. Because of failing health he left in 1977 to give the identity of the Catholicos Karekin Sarkissian a Coadjutor, who as Karekin II, his successor should be 1983 ( † 1999 Catholicos Karekin I of Etchmiadzin ).
