Location and landscape

  • Location of Solukhumbu in Nepal

The Khumbugebiet consists of the valleys of the three rivers Bhote Kosi, Dudh Kosi and Imja Khola, which are separated from each other by mountain ridges. These valleys are steadily increasing and go in large glaciers (eg Khumbu glacier) over which, in turn spill from six-to eight-thousanders.

The Khumbuvorland is called Solu. Summarized Both regions form the Solukhumbu District. The Solukhumbu is the northernmost district of Anchals ( अञ्चल ) Sagarmatha in Purva, the easternmost region of Nepal Development. The Khumbu is not an administrative unit, but a scenic region that is geographically and culturally delineated within the Solukhumbu.

Capital of Solukhumbu is Salleri.

The entire Khumbugebiet is accessible through numerous trekking trails, contains an extensive network of hotels and is one of the most popular trekking regions of the Himalayas (see also Mount Everest Trek).

Mountains

The part of the Himalayas, extending over the Khumbu area is referred to as Mahalangur Himal.

Many of the respected as sacred mountains (Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam ) have now been climbed. The only exception is the Khumbi Yul Lha, the " Holy Mother of the Khumbu ", whose ascent is absolutely taboo.

Colonization

The majority of the Khumbu Sherpas form. This native of Tibet ethnic group inhabited the Khumbuvorland Solutions.

In contrast to other Hindu Nepal this part of the country is dominated almost exclusively Buddhist. Religious center is the monastery of Tengboche ( 3,860 m). In the monastery of Khumjung ( 3,780 m) is stored in a metal cabinet of the legendary Yeti scalp.

The main town of the Khumbu is Namche Bazar ( 3,440 m). Namche is located at the intersection of Khumbutäler and thus all trekking routes. Other towns are Chukhung, Dingboche, Khumjung, Khunde, Lobuche, Machermo, Pangboche, Phortse and Thame.

In addition to the localities where Sherpas still live next to the operation of hostels traditionally from potato cultivation and Yakzucht, by the trekking tourism from former high pastures some new places have been created in recent decades, which consist exclusively of hostels, such as Gorak Shep or Gokyo.

Traffic

The Tenzing Hillary Airport Domestic Airport in Lukla is served daily from Kathmandu. From Lukla, there are only footpaths (1-2 days to Namche ). As an alternative to Lukla flight can be achieved by Jiri ( the more Western District Dolakha in Janakpur Anchal ) with an approximately one-week trek. For the transport of goods, there is a unpaved runway in Syangboche ( 3,720 m ), which is not served at the time only by helicopters and in regular service.

Roads do not exist in Khumbu, all goods are carried by porters, yaks or Dzopkyos ( a cross between a yak and domestic cattle ).
