Khutbah

Chutba (also: Khutba, Arabic خطبة, DMG khutba ) refers to the sermon at the weekly Friday prayers of the Muslims or the hard prayer to the Islamic festival of breaking the fast and the Festival of Sacrifice. It is used for spiritual edification and moral perfection.

The person who holds the Chutba is called Khatib. It usually is the Imam of the respective mosque. The approach, however, can also be held by another person, but some Islamic knowledge is required for it.

The Khateeb usually talks about a topic of their choice or relates to current events.

At Friday prayer is held Chutba ( salad) before the actual prayer and has a duration of about 20-40 minutes. When securing the Chutba prayer takes place after the prayer and is usually somewhat shorter.

History

Historically, the Friday prayer and the official Friday Sermon was held in every city in the main mosque. It (also) political decisions were in the early period by the caliph (or his provincial or military leaders ) announced. Since then, under the Abbasid mosques were abandoned as a political centers, there are several cities in the Friday mosques. But the political aspect remained, as far as the Chutba was held in the name of the caliph or the respective ruler.

Where the Friday service has been released, the number of Friday mosques grew very strong. The large spread of Friday mosques was also reflected in language use. Today in every major mosque Chutba is held in the Islamic Diaspora ( eg Europe ) quite in very small mosques.
