Khuzestan Province

Khuzestan (Persian خوزستان ) or Khuzistan is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. It is located on the northeastern shore of the Persian Gulf and its capital is Ahvaz.

In the province of 4,274,979 people ( 2006 census ). The province covers 64 055 square kilometers and has a population density of 67 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Policy

Khuzestan is 6 MP for the expertise and 18 representatives to the Parliament ( Majlis ).

Population

Shia Arabs comprise almost the majority of the population in the south of the province, while Shiite Persians and related ethnic groups as Bakhtiari and Lur in the north and east dominate. In the north of the province are alive as Kurds, which were settled after the Iran -Iraq war of the government there. Likewise, Khuzestan is home to the Iranian Mandaeans.

Geography

At times the Elamites, Babylonians and Medes Khuzestan was developed by sophisticated irrigation systems and applied to the Arabization in the 7th century as a granary Mesopotamia and Persia.

In the southern Iranian lowland between the Zagros Mountains and the Persian Gulf today outweigh desert-like steppe and more beside the river Karun, Kercha and Shatt al-Arab wetlands.

Economy

Because of productive oil and gas deposits Khuzestan has become the mid-20th century back to a world economically and geopolitically important region. From 1980 to 1988, the Iranian Khuzestan target of an Iraqi war of conquest. The province is still suffering from the devastation of the Iraqi- Arab armies (first Gulf War ).

In the province of Khuzestan are also the largest hydroelectric power plants and dams on the river Karun Iran near the city masjed Soleyman ( مسجد سلیمان Persian ).
