Kia Sorento (2002-2006)

The first-generation Sorento was introduced in spring 2002, as of August 2002, she was also offered on the German market.

The design was created by Byung -Jun Min for European tastes and set in March 2000. The subsequent development cost 260 million euros.

2004 reached the car in Germany with a market share of 4 %, followed by the Porsche Cayenne and the Volvo XC 90 So he finished eighth of 44 SUV models in the German market, which is a previously unusual for this manufacturer Delivery time of up to 12 months moved to yourself.

The best-selling engine for the Sorento was the common- rail turbo-diesel 2.5 CRDi with 103 kW / 140 PS. The two -tone paint scheme was included in the upscale EX equipment, monochrome models, however, were only available with the basic LX. This changed with the revision in late 2006. Example the Leather was before that in Germany only in gray.

Terrain capabilities

The Kia Sorento is a classic from the outer impression of her sport utility vehicle ( SUV), is built on a ladder frame with a screwed body with rear live axle and corresponds in construction rather an SUV. The front axle has an independent suspension with wishbones. With a torque of 340 Newton meters in the diesel engine can be a towing capacity of up to 2.8 t gross weight pull, since the facelift even up to 3.5 t.

In the LX version of the Sorento comes standard with selectable four-wheel drive with low range ratio. The EX has a permanent all-wheel drive, electronically controlled ( 0:100 to 50:50 ) with variable torque distribution front / rear and a terrain reduction. Thereby, the front-wheel drive is switched on only when required via a multi-plate clutch of the rear axle. An ESP was before the facelift not available, the elk test completed, the vehicle still perfectly. The chassis has been tuned tightly together with Porsche to the steering is described as directly.

  • Turning circle: 12 m
  • Axle articulation: about 230 mm
  • Fording depth: 450 mm
  • Ground clearance: 203 mm
  • Front overhang: 840 mm
  • Rear overhang: 1040 mm

Specifications

The Sorento was available in German speaking countries with the following engines: With gasoline engines 2.4 16V ( 102 kW/139 hp and 192 Nm of torque ), as a 3.5 V6 (143 kW/194 hp and 294 Nm) - from the end of 2006 replaced by a 3.3 V6 petrol engine (177 kW/242 hp and 304 Nm of torque ) - or as a diesel with 2.5 liter displacement and common rail injection ( 140 or 170 hp and 392 Nm of torque and 314-343 ). Although the diesel engine with 103 kW ( 140 PS) meets the Euro 3 emissions standards, but it is the gross vehicle weight assigned for the group III. Thus, the taxes are equal to those of a Euro 2 vehicle. At the end of 2006 introduced 170 hp diesel engine continues to apply the same thing, only one stage: The engine complies with or without the now optional, open particulate filter € 4, depending on the weight but again assigned to Group III, which are the taxes on Euro 3 level.

In all four cylinders, a five-speed manual transmission was standard equipment. The 3.5 V6, however, was always associated with a 4-speed automatic torque converter, the 140 hp diesel engine that was optional until 2004. At the same time, this transmission was replaced by a new 5-speed automatic transmission. We also find the diesel manual transmission in the lower gears was smoother and the torque of the diesel increased from 313 to 343 Nm. It was not until the end of 2006 the V6 engines also received a five- speed automatic transmission, a manual transmission was still not available for this.

* In 2006, the torque of the 103 kW increased to 343 Nm/1850-2500min-1 and since 09 /2006 at 125 kW, the torque of 392 Nm between 1850 - 2500min -1.

Crash tests

Four out of five stars was the Sorento at the U.S. NCAP crash test in a frontal collision. During a side crash, the Sorento has received five stars.

In the EuroNCAP crash test 2003 Sorento received four out of five stars. Were criticized deformations in the footwell, hard impact zones in the knee area and an increased risk of head injury by the airbag. In the side impact, however, he received a perfect score. The loads at all lateral parts of the body was slight. When pedestrian protection the Sorento received one of four possible stars.

Facelift

In December 2006, the Sorento received through a facelift revised appearance, which was connected to a power increase of petrol and diesel engines. In Germany, in addition to the in performance increased by 21%, 125 kW / 170 hp diesel engine, a new 3.3 -liter V6 petrol engine with 182 kW imported / 248 hp, which replaced the previous V6 petrol engine.

An ESP was henceforth standard. The permissible trailer load was increased from 2.8 to 3.5 tons.

The chassis, which has been matched in the original version along with Porsche, has now been re-tuned and alone, since described by testers as significantly more comfortable road-suited. The originally very hard tuning should reduce the slope of the curve entanglement in the field. However, it was retrofitted by many owners with a lift kit.

A solid color paint was now in the upscale EX equipment available, as long as the buyer opted for silver or black. LX equipment were still monochrome. The leather color in the interior was now available in addition to gray in black.

Crash tests

The U.S. NCAP crash test passed through the Sorento in 2011, two years after its release, and thus after the modernized testing procedures. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration now measures is more dummy points and added a post test, similar to that of Euro NCAP, in which the vehicle is pushed sideways to a tree-like post. After the vehicle reaches four stars in all three tests.

In the EU - NCAP crash test, the Sorento reached five stars. Slightly elevated loads, the driver in the frontal test on the chest and legs, the knees were kept away from the steering column area. In the side test only the chest slightly elevated pressures is exposed, the stake then test medium. When a rear impact test, the two-sided active head restraints cause effective protection. Pedestrians are exposed at the hip strong loads, high loads on the legs (16 out of 36 points ).
