Kicking Bird

Kicking Bird ( * 1835, † May 3, 1875 ) was a chief of the Kiowa. As leader of the peace faction among the Kiowa he tried to reach a peaceful settlement with the Americans.

After the unexpected death of the High Chief Dohasan in 1866, Kicking Bird led the peace party of his tribe and became the opponent of the chiefs Satanta and Lone Wolf, who advocated a more belligerent policy towards the Americans.

1872 Kicking Bird was appointed by representatives of the United States to the paramount chief, but without having the appropriate support in their own tribe.

After he had to appoint 50 Kiowas on behalf of the U.S. government in the spring of 1875, the representative should go for the entire tribe into captivity in Florida, he lost all prestige in his tribe. Shortly thereafter, in May 1875 he was found dead in his teepee. Assumptions imply that he was poisoned by his own tribe.
