Kifissia (Greek Κηφισιά ( f sg ), Latin Cephissia ) is a municipality and city in the Northeastern region of Attica in Greece, and a suburb of Athens. Kifissia is the northern terminus of line 1 of the Athens Metro.

History

In the 19th century until well into the 20th century the town was a popular destination for Athenians who partly built holiday homes. Foreign guests especially appreciate the clean air on Pentelicon Mountains. It produced numerous Grand Hotels ( of which the Pentelicon is only still in operation ).

In Kifissia the then Greek leader Ioannis Metaxas in 1940 handed over to the Italian ultimatum to his famous reply " όχι! " According to the legend ( "No!" ) Resulted.

When the Metro was extended up to the main square of the town in the early 1950s to Kifissia turned into a noble residence with apartment buildings. Today, the place has lost its importance as a high society place of residence on the adjacent district of Kifissia. The place could assert itself as upscale shopping center with numerous luxury shops and restaurants and competes to the Athens district of Kolonaki.

Location and municipal districts

Due to the local government reform of 2010, the former municipality of Kifissia was combined with the more northerly Nea Erythrea and Kifissia. Kifissia is since in the extreme north of the Regional District Athens -Nord.

It includes:

  • Kifissia ( with the villages of Ano Kifissia, Kato Kifissia, Adames, Nea Kifissia, Kifissia, Twentyone ): 45,015 inhabitants, 25.94 ha
  • Nea Erythrea: 15,972 inhabitants, 4.83 ha
  • Kifissia: 5,497 inhabitants, 4:33 ha
