Kifle Wodajo

Ato Kifle Wodajo ( born October 30, 1936 in Addis Ababa, † April 28, 2004 in South Africa) was an Ethiopian diplomat and politician.

Biography

Kifle Wodajo came from a family of dignitaries at the court of Emperor Haile Selassie and was at the age of just 26 years, in May 1963 the first Secretary General of the newly formed Organization of African Unity (OAU ). In later years he was Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York City as well as Ambassador to the United States.

Between 1974 and 1977 he was finally in place of Zewde Gabre - Selassie Secretary of the military junta ( Derg ) after the fall of Haile Selassie and went then to the coming to power of Mengistu Haile Mariam to 1991 into exile, where he mainly lived in the United States.

After his return he was elected a member of the national House of Representatives (House of People's Representatives ) in 1991 and was temporarily Chairman of the Commission to draft a constitution. After he had retired from political life in 1996, he became head of the Horn of Africa Peace Centre, a non-governmental organization dedicated to the advancement of peace and conflict prevention in the region. Between 1998 and 2000 he was a member of the International Staff to investigate the causes of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994.
