Kii Peninsula

Geographical location

The Kii peninsula (纪 伊 半岛jap, Kii Hanto ) is one of the largest peninsulas on Honshu, the main Japanese island. The Wakayama prefectures, as well as the southern part of Osaka Prefecture, and large parts of the prefectures of Nara and Mie are on her. To the west it borders the Seto Inland Sea, on the east by the Pacific Ocean.

On the Kii peninsula there are many hot springs, so many famous onsen are locate here.

Here are also the Kii mountains, which were declared in 2004 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Major places on the Kii Peninsula are:

  • Nara, the former capital
  • The mountain region Koya ( Kōya -san ) with the same headquarters of the Buddhist Shingon school
  • The Negoro Temple ( Negoro -ji), headquarters of the "New Shingon doctrine "
  • Wakayama, formerly the seat of the Kii or Kishu branch of the Tokugawa family
  • Matsusaka, an important center for cattle
  • Ise, Ise Shrine of the seat and the center of the bead extraction
  • Iga, famous for its Ninja
  • Yoshino, a heavily forested mountain region, retreat of the southern imperial court in the Nanboku -chō period
  • The Kumano region in which the Kumano shrines and the Nachi waterfall located.
