Kiikla ( German Kiekel ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Mäetaguse. It is located in Ida- Viru county in northeastern Estonia.

Description and History

The village has 245 inhabitants (as of 2006).

Kiikla was first mentioned in documents in 1241 in Liber Census Daniæ. Probably originated in 1601 for the first time a mansion.

August von Kotzebue

In 1780, founded in Kiikla the Baltic German Baron Friedrich von Rosen a house and amateur theater. The writer and dramatist August von Kotzebue was a frequent guest there. In Kiikla Kotzebue met his future wife Friederike Juliane Eleanor of food know. In Kiikla closed Kotzebue lifelong friendship with the former tutor of Baron Friedrich Gustav Arvelius (1753-1806), an influential popular educator and writer of his time. Arvelius later supported the work of Kotzebue lovers and amateur theater in Tallinn. In Kiikla Arvelius, who had studied in Leipzig and was a follower of Pestalozzi wrote his two major works of Estonian Üks Kaunis Jutto yes Õppetuse - Ramat ( 1782 and 1787) and Ramma Josepi Hädda yes Abbi - Ramat (1790).

1991 was consecrated in honor of Friedrich Gustav Arvelius a plaque at the mansion of Kiikla.

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the mansion managing a collective farm was located. Currently, the building is empty.
