Killaloe (County Clare)

Killaloe ( Irish: Cill Dalua, German: " Luas church " ) is a town in County Clare in Ireland. 2006 was one of the place in 1035 inhabitants. It lies on the southern edge of Lough Derg and extends on both banks of the Shannon.

History

Its origins are traced back to a foundation of the holy Molua or Lua, originally downstream of today's Killaloe Bridge was something on an island in the Shannon. This settlement was later moved to the mainland.

The St. Flannan 's Cathedral was built in 1185-1225. In the 14th century, the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt. In the Elizabethan era, the seat of the county was moved to Ennis and waned the importance of place.

Bridge

1013 for the first time a wooden bridge over the Shannon was mentioned. It was replaced in the 18th century by a stone bridge with 17 arches, which was later shortened to 13 sheets.
