Kilrush ( Irish: Cill Rois ) is a town in County Clare, Ireland, with 2694 inhabitants ( 2006). It is the neighboring town of Kilkee and sits at the mouth of the River Shannon. On the offshore island Scattery Iceland are the ruins of a monastery built in the early 6th century.

Environment / Excursions

Kilrush is a good starting point for trips to Loop Head and the Cliffs of Kilkee, which can be considered as an insider tip, as most tourists go to the famous Cliffs of Moher. Picturesque along the coast, the winds N67 towards Galway City. Towards the famous golf town Lahinch, the Cliffs of Moher ( about R478 ) and the village of Doolin is with ferry services to the Aran Islands. In the other direction, the N67 leads by ferry across the River Shannon to Tarbert in County Kerry and thus saves a detour of about 140 km above Limerick City.
