Kilwa Masoko

Kilwa Masoko is a port city on the Indian Ocean in Tanzania with 12,324 inhabitants ( 2002 census ).

History

The town grew from a fishing village after the Second World War, when the British colonial administration decided to relocate the county seat of Kilwa District Kilwa Kivinje here. Therefore, the city got its name from Kiswahili " Kilwa with the market".

Presence

Kilwa Masoko has a daily market, which is important for the entire district. Here is the biggest fishing port between Dar es Salaam and Lindi. The place has a certain touristic importance as a starting point for tours to the ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani on the barrier island. There are two hotels of the middle class as well as an airfield, which is also served by medium-sized propeller aircraft on scheduled services several times a week.
