Kim Collins

Kim Collins (born 5 April 1976) is an athlete from St. Kitts and Nevis, the 2003 world champion was in the 100 -meter run.

Career

Collins took the first time in 1997 in part to greater competition. At the World Championships in Athens, however, he dropped out in the first round of heats. Collins increased its performance continuously and was at the Summer Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney the first athlete of his country, who could ever qualify for an Olympic final. At the end, he finished with a time of 10.17 s seventh.

The following year, Collins won at the World Championships in Edmonton, the first World Cup medal in the history of his country, when he ran the 200 meters, together with the Americans Shawn Crawford to third. About 100 meters it was enough with the time of 10.07 s only sixth.

At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester Collins won his first major title. He won the 100 meters, however, benefited from the fact that two other highly rated competitors could not compete due to injury. His victory was overshadowed by doping rumors. After the race, Collins was tested positive. However, it was found that the substance found was contained in the drug, which Collins for several years, adopted towards his asthma and he had forgotten to mention in relation to the medical commission. Collins was able to retain his title and got off with a warning. In the final he ran 9.98 s with his personal best, which he reached twice at meetings in Paris and Zurich in the same year.

At the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2003 he won the silver medal in the 60 meters in 6.53 s

The greatest success of his career celebrated Collins at the 2003 World Championships in Paris. After defending champion and Olympic champion Maurice Greene was already eliminated in the semifinals, Collins ran in 10.07 s to the world title in the 100 meters. The race was one of the closest decisions in the history of the 100 - meter race. In the end, only 0.02 seconds separated the four winners.

In the 2004 Olympics he finished sixth in the 100 meters.

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005, he could not defend his title and was s third behind Justin Gatlin and Michael Frater, with a time of 10.05. In the second round he qualified only on the time rule for the semifinals, where he managed only fourth in its run to the final. In the final, however, he proved his qualities as a competitive sprinter and surprised by winning the bronze medal, he was not one but due to its seasonal best of 10.00 s and his unconvincing first three runs in Helsinki at the favorites in the finals. Another career highlight was winning the silver medal in the 60 meters at the World Indoor Championships 2008 in Valencia.

At the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, he managed to surprise when he won the bronze medal. After a sensational start, he was overtaken in the final meters of Walter Dix and came to 10.09 s in third place.

On 24 October 2011, he set a new record for the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, when he ran in the semifinals s 10.0. In the final he was defeated by the Jamaican Lerone Clarke s with 10.04.

On August 4, 2012, the National Olympic Committee of St. Kitts and Nevis announced that Collins should not start at the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, as he had several times taken at night with his wife. Collins announced then that he would not start for his country.

When Athlétissima in Lausanne in 2013 he came with 9.97 s in fourth place. This time meant not only a new personal best, but also the setting of the world record of more than 35 -year-old sprinters, which holds Linford Christie.
