There, however, he only threw 78.04 meters and finished tenth. At the European Championships in 1990 in Split he fared similarly: went into the competition with a personal best of 83.10 from the previous year, succeeded him there is only one throw of 79.00 meters, which put him at No. 8. A year later, at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, then hit his big moment after he had already increased in the preseason his personal best to 85.46 meters, qualifying him in a further step forward to a full three meters at 88.48 m. No other bowler came on this day more than 90 meters, and his compatriot and arch rival Seppo Räty was beaten.

In the following period, Kimmo Kinnunen could not always meet the high expectations screwed. In the XV. 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona brought him his only valid throw first to rank 3, from which he was still repressed in the fourth round of the British Steve Backley. However, he managed to revenge the following year at the World Championships in Stuttgart in 1993.
