Kimry

Kimry (Russian Кимры ) is a town with 49 628 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and Rajon center in Tver Oblast in Russia.

Geography and climate

The city lies on the left and on the right bank of the Uglich Reservoir of the Volga River, about 200 km north of Moscow and 133 km east of the regional center of Tver. The nearest towns are Dubna (17 km south-west of Kimry ) and Taldom (18 km south-east ), both located in the neighboring Moscow Oblast.

The climate in and around Kimry is continental temperate and comparable to the climate of the Moscow environs. Are usual in comparison to Central and Western Europe dry winters with temperatures between -10 and -20 ° C and moderately warm summers with 20-25 ° C. The annual rainfall is usually 600-650 mm.

History

Kimry was first mentioned in 1547 as a fishing and artisan village. The place name ( until the 20th century Kimra instead Kimry ) is a potentially derived from the Finno -Ugric languages ​​hydronym the eponymous river, which flows into the Volga.

In the 16th and 17th centuries Kimry belonged alternately to the Tsar's court near several noble families. Only in the middle of the 19th century was the place in the state-owned. In the 18th century, the shoe trade began in Kimry to develop that so far widened here until the beginning of the 20th century that in 1907 the town was founded a shoe factory. Later, in Soviet times, this was called "Red Star" and established, among other army boots.

Also on the coat of arms of Kimry the importance of shoemaking is visible to the city: There is a Russian ship seen floating on the Volga, which is stylized in the figure as a series of pairs of shoes.

1917 Kimry received city rights, and in 1929 the capital of the newly formed Rajons Kimry, which originally belonged to the Moscow Oblast in 1935 and then to Tver Oblast.

Economy and Transport

Apart from the active to the present day footwear are available in Kimry textile mills, wood processing and mechanical engineering. Due to attractive, landscaped location, tourism is becoming increasingly important.

Kimry has with the station Sawjolowo, which is directly connected inter alia with the Moscow Savyolovsky railway station, a railway connection.
