King Tubby

King Tubby ( born January 28, 1941 in Kingston, Jamaica; † 6 February 1989), whose real name is Osbourne Ruddock, was a Jamaican reggae sound engineer with his own studio. He influenced significantly the development of dub.

Life

Osbourne Ruddock, born 1941 in Kingston worked as "electronic engineer", ie, he repaired from radio to TV everything was incurred in its territory. In 1968 he founded his sound system Home Town Hi Fi and stood out for the use of its unique reverb and delay effects devices from the bulk of the time resulting sound system. The first dub track Tubby was more by chance, because of the busy time at Duke Reid and his Treasure Isle label as dubplate cutter Ruddock had mistakenly parts of the vocal track of tunes away. Another explanation is that he let the music track ( at that time was taken up even in the two-track process ) on purpose for a few bars away to check whether the singer had actually made the sound. He, however, liked the " error " or the effect, which was triggered by the reinstate -setting music track. More specifically, he was so enthusiastic that he began to develop his own style of music from it.

The joint work with Edwart Beckford, better known as U- Roy, who filled out the instrumental Dubs Tubby with vocal interjections, in turn brought a new style of reggae music out, the toasting ( forerunner of the currently known rap and the deejaying ). Tubby built 1972, a small studio in Waterhouse ( Kingston), in which he first experimented around with different effects processors, equalizers combined with this and so brought forth a then unrivaled new sound. He also began increasingly to work with other producers at this time, such as Bunny Lee and Lee "Scratch" Perry, with whom he 1973 stereo dub album " Blackboard Jungle Dub" completed it. 1974 Tubby worked a lot with Bunny Lee, who many of its artists, including Cornell Campbell and Johnny Clarke recorded at Tubby in the studio. In the mid-70s King Jammy took over the work as an engineer at Tubby's studio, later Overton " Scientist" Brown. Tubby steadily working on his new studio, which he completed early 80s and then in 1986 with Anthony Red Roses " temper" (aka pace ) landed his first big hit.

1989 Osbourne Ruddock was shot dead at the age of 48 years by a mugger. His labels include: Waterhouse, Firehouse, Taurus, Kingston 11
