Kings Point (Film)

Kings Point is an American documentary short film from the year 2013. Director was Sari Gilman. The film about five American retirees was nominated for the Academy Awards in 2013 for an Academy Award for "Best Short Documentary ".

Background

Kings Point is a village in Palm Beach County in Florida. There is a " retirement community ", in which the grandparents of the filmmaker in 1978 attracted. Gilman visited the grandparents regularly in Florida and won as a child the impression of a " summer camps for old men." Over the years, Gilman noticed a change in the relations of friends and neighbors to each other, recognized a change in the topics of conversation and saw the group of seniors was getting smaller. After Gilman Kings Point had attended for 20 years, Gilman is dealt intensively with the seniors of American society and their lifestyle. The filmmaker dealt with the aging process and its consequences in a society that praises the high value of independence.

The shooting of the film took two years, another three years passed in post-production. Overall, Gilman worked for ten years at the documentation.

Action

Sari Gilman accompanied Jane, Mollie, Gert, Bea and Frank, in a retirement home, a " retirement community ", located in Kings Point, Florida. Frank spends a lot of time with Bea, but actually he wants a slightly younger woman at his side. Gert would not pull with their children, while Mollie wishes after the death of her husband, she would never leave New York. The five seniors speak with Gilman about the changing friendships, about how hard it is to maintain deep friendships in old age. They report on love in old age and tell why you keep his illness stories in Kings Point for themselves.

Gilman goes in her film also addresses the downsides of aging and tells of illness, loneliness and death.

Reception

Michael Winerip saw the film for the New York Times and judged Kings Point as " moving" ( "moving "). He recommends the movie, even though it is not always easy to see ( " I recommend it, though the film is not always easy to watch. ").
