Parish

Kingstown is the capital of the monarchy St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Parish of Saint George on the south coast of the island of St. Vincent. With 16,600 inhabitants ( 2009) it is the largest city in the country.

The city is the seat of the Diocese of Kingstown.

Traffic

Thanks to its seaport, the city is the center of the agricultural industry in the country and offers from their Ferry connections to the southern Grenadines, particularly to the island of Bequia. Kingstown is the home port of some famous ships such as Paloma I, Syria Star, Zhen Hua 10 and A. von Humboldt.

History

Kingstown was established in 1722 by the French. 1779, the British captured the island. Submitted on January 24, 1793 William Bligh ( famous for the Mutiny on the Bounty ) with the HMS Providence in the city's harbor and brought under other plants the first breadfruit seedlings to the island.

Attractions

  • The eight -acre botanical garden opened in 1765 and is the oldest of the Leeward Islands.
  • The Anglican Cathedral of St. George dates from the early 19th century; the Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary was built in 1935.
  • North of Kingstown on the west coast (about 20 km distance) was filmed in the Bay Wallilabou at settlement Barrouallie parts of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean". Remains of buildings created for the scene image of the film are still preserved in the bay.
  • Fort Duvernette and Young Iceland west of the Blue Lagoon
  • The Fort Charlotte, named after Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg -Strelitz, Queen of England, is a fortress that was built in 1806 on a 200 meter high cliff by the British.
