Kinuyo Tanaka

Kinuyo Tanaka (Japanese田中 绢 代, born November 28, 1910 in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, † March 21, 1977 ) was a Japanese actress and director.

Tanaka began her career as a teenager in various revues (1920-1923), before her screen debut in 1924. She married director Hiroshi Shimizu, but quickly ended the connection in order to get a divorce in the same year. Their role in Okoto to Sasuke (1935 ) brought her recognition.

In its fifty year career, she impressed particularly by Kenji Mizoguchi's films The victory of the Women (1946 ), Utamaro and his five women ( 1946) on Kitagawa Utamaro, Love the actress Sumako (1947 ) on Matsui Sumako, Women of the Night ( 1948), the flame of my love (1949 ), Ms. Oyu (1951 ), the wife of Oharu the life ( 1952), Ugetsu - tales of the Moonlight and Rain (1953), Sansho Dayu - A life without freedom (1954) and A woman of the Year one speaks (1954). Akira Kurosawa hired her for Red Beard (1965).

For her performance in Kei Kumais Sandakan No. 8 Tanaka in 1975 at the Berlinale with a silver bear. She played her last role in 1976 alongside Claude Jade and Go Kato in Kumais film The North Cape.
