Kirill Sosunov

Kirill Olegovich Sossunow (Russian Кирилл Олегович Сосунов, English transcription Kirill Sosunov, . Born 1 November 1975 in Ryazan ) is a Russian long jumper whose greatest success of the European Championship title in 1998.

Sossunow won at the 1995 Universiade in Fukuoka with 8.21 m his first international title. For the same distance to the second-placed German Georg Ackermann Sossunow won because of better second best attempt. At the European Indoor Championships in Stockholm in 1996 he was charged with 7.87 m seventh.

1997 Second Sossunow was at the World Indoor Championships in Paris. With 8.41 m, it was ten inches behind Ivan Pedroso of Cuba, and on par with Joe Greene from the U.S., again the better second-best effort was crucial. In the first U23 European Championships in Turku, he was defeated by the Portuguese Carlos Calado 8.30 m by two centimeters. In Athens at the 1997 World Championships he won with 8.18 m bronze, but was significantly behind Ivan Pedroso and the Americans Erick Walder.

On June 27, 1998 Sossunow put on his Freiluftbestweite of 8.38 m at its European Cup victory in Saint-Petersburg. At the European Championships 1998 in Budapest Sossunow jumped the largest size already in the qualification with 8,14 m. In the final, he scored the third attempt 8,28 m. He won the title by seven centimeters ahead of the Romanians Bogdan Tarus.

In the following years Sossunow was indeed repeatedly in major championships there, but was unable to win more medals. At the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens, he failed each Sixteenth than in qualifying. In the European Indoor Championships in Vienna in 2002, he was with 8.02 m fifth. In Budapest at the World Indoor Championships in 2004, he was only seventh in spite of 8.16 m.

The one with a height of 1.90 m and a competition weight of 86 kg for a long jumper unusually strong Sossunow was never Russian master, represented his country but five times during the European Cup, where he won in 1997 and 1998. Sossunow is married to high jumper Olga Kaliturina. In bobsled World Cup 2006/2007 he came in sixth in the team competition by Yevgeny Popw to second place.
