Kirovabad pogrom

The pogrom in Kirovabad was a program conducted by Azerbaijanis pogrom in November 1988 in Kirovabad (now Ganja, Ganja Germanized ), the second largest city of Azerbaijan, was perpetrated on people of Armenian descent.

During the pogrom Soviet troops were deployed for the purpose of security with the task to protect the Armenians in Kirovabad. The Los Angeles Times reported that soldiers were dozens of Azerbaijani attempts to massacre the Armenian population in their homes to prevent.

After selbigem Report of the Los Angeles Times on November 27, 1988 the Soviet Union authorities confirmed the death of seven people. These were three soldiers of the Red Army, three Azerbaijanis and Armenians one. Other official reports at the time reported the death of 10 to 12 people. Human rights activists said, but up to 130 people killed alone in Kirovabad. The New York Times already wrote on 26 November that the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize Andrei Sakharov also reported from more than 130 killed and over 200 wounded Armenians in the city.
