Kissimmee is a city and also the county seat of Osceola County in the U.S. state of Florida with 59 682 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Kissimmee is located approximately 25 km south of Orlando. The city is part of Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA ) Orlando- Kissimmee -Sanford, Florida ( called Greater Orlando ), in which more than 2.1 million people.

History

Kissimmee was founded in the mid 19th century under the name of Allendale. In 1883 the town was officially renamed in Kissimmee. In the years 1894 and 1895, a long period of cold weather was invading the region. It caused severe crop failures. In 1900 Kissimmee got electricity. In 1943, the Monument of States was inaugurated. A flood in 1956 caused about $ 2 million damage in Kissimmee. After the Disney park, which opened in 1971, also the hitherto largest source of revenue for the city from agriculture to tourism changed.

Demographics

28.9 % of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.6 % were 20-39 years old, 26.6 % were 40-59 years old and 13.9 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 34 years. 48.6 % of the population were male and 51.4 % female.

The average annual income was $ 38,158, while 19.6 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 55.30 % of the population spoke Spanish 37.92 % and 6.78% had a different mother tongue.
