Na - Ranong attended Assumption School Bangkok and the Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok. He studied economics at Chulalongkorn University, where he graduated in 1980. He then studied further at the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration. After his studies he worked on the Thailand stock exchange and, after a few years of the Thai Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He was Vice President of the Sasin Graduate Institute and president of the private Shinawatra University.
In 2007, he became involved in the party Thais United. On 9 August 2011, he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Affairs in the government of Yingluck Shinawatra. Following a cabinet reshuffle in January 2012 he lost the Ministry of Economy and was appointed Minister of Finance of Thailand.
