Kjell Eugenio Laugerud García

Kjell Eugenio Laugerud García ( born January 24, 1930 in Guatemala City, † December 9, 2009 ) was a Guatemalan General and President of 1974 until 1978.

Life

Laugerud was the son of a Norwegian and a Guatemalan.

Military career

After attending the Military Academy ( Escuela Politécnica ), the Superintendent, he was in 1965, he was appointed military attaché in the United States. Later Laugerud García rose during the term of President Carlos Arana Osorio (1970-1974) promoted to head of the General Staff and Minister of Defense.

Presidency 1974-1978

Laugerud García's election to the presidency in March 1974 was overshadowed by violence and allegations of fraud. On 1 July 1974, he broke Arana Osorio from as president. He was like this the candidate of the right-wing coalition of Movemiento de Liberacion Nacional ( MLN) and Partido Institucional Democrático (PID). During his presidency, he announced a program of economic austerity, but retained many ministers of the previous government.

After a devastating earthquake on February 4, 1976, he took on loans from the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank and the German Investment and Development Company for the reconstruction of roads, hospitals and electricity lines and to promote fishing and processing industry. He then managed the distribution of supplies and expected orders. However, the misfortune brought only a temporary unity. The political unrest that had accompanied Laugerud García's choice, began to grow again during the remaining term of office.
