Klai Kangwon Palace

Klai Kangwon The ( Thai: วัง ไกล กังวล, German about: Remote - of - worry - Palace) is a royal palace in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, in the southern part of the central region of Thailand.

Architectural History

Prince Itthithepsan Kritakara, who had studied at the École des Beaux -Arts was given by King Prajadhipok (Rama VII ) commissioned to design a summer palace for him and his queen Rambai Barni. Preparations for the construction site began in 1926, actual construction began on 21 September 1927. On April 10, 1929, the inauguration of the first completed villa was celebrated. More buildings were added gradually until 1933.

Palace

Since the Klai Kangwon Palace was built as a summer residence, there is no throne halls in which audiences could be held. As the King had no concubines, there was also no need to the traditional separation between a wing for women and a separate wing for the men maintain. Instead, there is only one royal residential area, and accommodations for the entourage.

First, the palace consisted of three villas: the Phra Tamnak Piamsuk ( Thai: พระ ตำหนัก เปี่ยม สุข ), the Tamnak Plukkasem ( Thai: พระ ตำหนัก ปลุก เกษม ) and the Tamnak Noi ( Thai: พระ ตำหนัก น้อย ). In addition, there were some outbuildings for the suite as well as a multi-purpose pavilion, the Sala Roeng ( Thai: ศาลา เริง ), in which the king was celebrating private parties. The three villas were oriented toward the sea, the largest, the Tamnak Piamsuk, lay in the middle, to the south lay Tamnak Noi in a large courtyard. The northern Tamnak Plukkasem lay back a little. While the three villas were built three stories each, the outbuildings had only one floor.

Because the architect had studied in a Western country, the architectural style of the buildings is more Western than Thai, but concessions have been made to the hot climate. The roof of the building, the design of courtyards and large terrace with pergola remember large country houses in Spain, with raw materials from the environment.

The present King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX. ) Commissioned for Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn an additional villa which was built in the same style as the original building of King Prajadhipok.

Use of the palace

Although the name of the palace "Remote - of - worry " was, was King Prajadhipok - just as he lived in the Summer Palace here - informed about the revolution of 1932 in Bangkok, as the modifications were made absolute to a constitutional monarchy. The king thanked short time from later and moved to England where he died in 1941.

The current King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit his Kitiyakara often like to reside in the Klai Kangwon Palace. During her reign, the palace grounds were enlarged and some additional buildings erected. If no one is present by the royal family, the palace grounds for the general public is open.
