The Klaipėda railway station is one of the major stations of the Lithuanian railway company Lietuvos Geležinkeliai in the seaport city of Klaipeda ( Memel ).
History
The station was opened in 1875 following the opening of the Prussian railway Tilsit, Memel. 1892 a line extension was opened after Bajohren. From Memel still wrong Kleinbahnen after Plicken, Laugallen and Pöszeiten ( opened in 1905 ). During the First World War came a link added to the Lithuanian network, which was soon cut by the new Lithuanian- Latvian border. Therefore, a line was built to Šiauliai 1925-1932, which is the most important rail link Klaipeda remained the Lithuanian countryside today.
Importance
The railroad has above all importance for heavy freight to and from the Baltic Sea port. In passenger trains to Vilnius on Šiauliai.
Architecture
The station is located northeast of downtown and is next to an old Grade II listed station building which is used as a restaurant today, from a modern red brick building with a prominent tower. In the immediate vicinity of the station is now home to important international bus station of the city.
