Klara Church

The Klara Church ( Swedish: S: ta Clara kyrka or Klara kyrka ) is a church building in the center of the Swedish capital Stockholm. The church stands near the main railway station in the district of Norrmalm.

History and Architecture

In the 1280s established at the same place a nunnery with the church. The entire monastery was demolished in 1527 by order of Gustav Vasa. Today, only two doors exist for an altarpiece of this period. The present church was built under John III. for the Dutch architect Henrik van Huwen ordered to Sweden. It is believed that Willem Boy, the then court architect, was involved in the construction.

The building of brick with the plan of a Latin cross was a high pointed roof on the church tower. Nave, transept and tower originated 1572-1590. Interior of the church is covered with a cross vault. The vestries were added east and west of the north transept. The western sacristy, which was expanded again in the 19th century originated in 1651. Located on the gables of the transepts stairwells and around the tower created equal side attachments. Another staircase was probably built in 1726 after drawings by Göran josuae Adelcrantz, at the southern transept.

A disastrous fire swept the building in 1751 and the rebuilding was started a year later after drawings by Carl Hårleman. The northern stairway was built and the roof was given its present form. The tower and the facade got its present appearance in the renovation 1884-1886 by Heligoland Zettervall. The interior is characterized today by the renovation of 1906/ 07 by Agi Lindegren. Olle Hjortzberg (1872-1959) decorated the vaults with paintings.

In the 1930s, the 1,400 m² church roof with 1,600 copper plates were covered with a total weight of 10,000 kg. The tower is 116 meters, the second highest in Sweden and Scandinavia (after the Cathedral in Uppsala ) and the fifth- tallest building in Sweden.

The restoration from 1963 to 1965 under Artur von Schmalensee had mainly technical significance.

Field of activity

In addition to conducting worship services, the church is the basis for comprehensive support services to people in need in central Stockholm. In this example, the homeless, alcoholics and refugees are supplied with clothes and food and prostitutes as well as stressed and sick persons and prisoners support in nearby prisons with conversations and prayers. The deacons, priests and volunteers are organized in the local church or in the club "Friends of Clare Church." The club also has youth groups, prayer and Bible study groups, and leads courses on the fundamentals of the Christian faith.

Interior

The altarpiece from 1766 was created by J. Hoffman. The altarpiece was built from 1787 to 1790 after a design by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz and the baptismal font created Thorén T. 1908.

The altar is surmounted by two kneeling angels framed which were cut in 1904 from a plaster originals by Johan Tobias Sergel. The pulpit was probably written in 1753 by Carl Hårlemans drawings.
