Klaus-Dieter Lehmann

Klaus -Dieter Lehmann ( * February 29, 1940 in Breslau) is a German librarian and the president of the Goethe Institute (since April 2008).

Life

He studied mathematics and physics at the Universities of Cologne and Mainz and put 1967 his diploma. Then he devoted himself next to an activity at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, studying library science, which he completed in 1970 with the second exam. After his studies, he first state university librarian in Darmstadt. From 1973 he was Director of the City and University Library in Frankfurt am Main and in 1978 became its Executive Director.

In 1988 he became Director General of the German National Library in Frankfurt. After the reunification, he led the two national libraries in Frankfurt and Leipzig ( German Library ) and the German Music Archive in Berlin together with retention of all three sites organizationally under the name " The German Library " (now German National Library ).

In 1998, the call to Berlin as President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. In February 2008, he resigned from office; his successor was Hermann Parzinger. Lehmann was elected as successor to Jutta Limbach on 11 September 2007 as the new President of the Goethe Institute; his election was confirmed immediately by German Foreign Minister Frank -Walter Steinmeier. Lehmann joined the office on 1 April 2008. Since 2002 he had been Vice President of the Goethe Institute.

With emphasis Lehmann has repeatedly used for the restitution of German cultural ( art looted ) from the successor states of the Soviet Union and the Provenance Research. He engaged crucial for the restoration of the Museum Island in Berlin and celebrated in his tenure as President of the Foundation of Prussian Kulturbesitzt the reopening of the Old National Gallery and the Bode Museum. He also brought further plans such as the reconstruction of the Staatsbibliothek Unter den Linden, the reopening of the Old and the New Museum or the redesign of the Berlin Palace Square on the way.

Lehmann is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to numerous other volunteer positions, he is the Board of Trustees of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Germanic National Museum and a member of the Board of Deutsches Museum. He is an honorary member of the Association of German Librarians and the Association of German Book Trade. The Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich awarded him in 2001 the honorary doctorate. In 2010 he was made an honorary senator of the Humboldt University in Berlin.
