Klaus Gattermann

Klaus gate man ( born January 8, 1961 in Zwiesel ) is a former German ski racer. He was a member from 1978 until 1989, the German National Ski Team.

Career

Gate man was born the son of a teacher couple and grew up in Bavarian Eisenstein. After finishing high school, he took up an apprenticeship as a toolmaker and then joined the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr.

His talent as a skier showed up early. In 1978 he was at the German Junior Championship second in the giant slalom and shortly after he finished at the German Championship Rank 8 in the slalom and giant slalom Rank 7. Numerous resignations from the national team after the World Cup 1978 prompted the coach of the DSV gate man to let go already as 17 -year-olds in the World Cup at the start. Too early, as gate man himself says in retrospect.

It took two years until he could be placed at a combined score in the top ten, and again two and a half years until this was achieved in a downhill race. In advance of the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo gate man then established himself in the enlarged world leaders and was in the Olympic downhill with rank 12 the second best German. In the same year he became German champion in the downhill.

In December 1984, him at the exit of Val Gardena finally succeeded with the fourth place, the best downhill result of his career. Suddenly his career was interrupted by a heavy crash in the downhill on the Streif in Kitzbuehel on January 11, 1985. At the Hausbergkannte he lost control of his skis and overturned several times. The race had to be stopped for about half an hour. Gate man came off comparatively lightly in the accident: in addition to a concussion he broke his nose.

Nevertheless, the fall in Kitzbühel started a new career end gate 's. Although he struggled after his convalescence back in the national team and has already picked up two weeks later participated in the World Cup 1985. With 13th place at the World Cup in 1987 and 10th place in the 1989 World Cup he scored also some notable successes. Constant excellence stayed away, however. After the 1988/89 season, gate man retired from active racing and worked as a racing boss when Straubinger Volkl ski manufacturer.
