Klaus M. Leisinger

Michael Klaus Leisinger ( born February 6, 1947 in Lörrach ) is a social scientist and economist. He is Chairman of the Trustees of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development.

Biography

Klaus M. Leisinger studied economics and social sciences at the University of Basel, PhD in Development Sociology and his habilitation in sociology on the topic " health policy for the least developed countries". His professional career took him as director of pharmaceutical regional offices of the former Ciba for several years to East Africa. After his return to the head office in Switzerland, he was responsible for the international relations of the company. During his tenure Klaus Leisinger deepened its corporate ethics and work actively promoted a corporate culture of open dialogue with stakeholders from the fields of international politics, development ¬ cooperation and business ethics.

Since 1996-2012 Leisinger was Managing Director of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, which is funded by the pharmaceutical company Novartis. Since March 2012, Klaus Leisinger is Chairman of the Trustees of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development (NFSD ). For 30 years, the Foundation pursues a consistent strategy to combat poverty and supported the needy millions in low-income countries, for example, by measures for the cure of leprosy, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as health education, agricultural development and the protection of children who are particularly vulnerable. Even academic studies and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders include the portfolio activity of the Foundation. Due to this combination of on-site work and academic activities, the Foundation is considered unique institution in the private sector. In addition, the Foundation has consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (UN ECOSOC). Klaus Leisinger is now senior member of the international development community.

In addition to his position at Novartis, Klaus Leisinger is Professor of Sociology at the University of Basel. He researches and teaches on a wide range of issues of international development and health policy and in the fields of business ethics, corporate social responsibility and the issue of private sector and human rights. He has contributed significantly to the scientific debate through publications in refereed journals and books in several languages. Klaus Leisinger taught as a visiting professor at several European universities and at the University of Notre Dame, MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge and DePaul University. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. In November 2004 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology at the University of Fribourg ( Switzerland ).

Klaus Leisinger works in numerous advisory positions for national and international organizations such as the UN Global Compact, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum (Global Agenda Council on Human Rights ). From Kofi Annan, he was appointed Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General for the UN Global Compact in 2005. This mandate ended with the term of office of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 31 December 2006. Klaus Leisinger was also a member of the United Nations High Level Commission for Information Policy and accountability ¬ duty to improve the health of women and children. He is also co-chair of the Digital Health Initiative - a unique collaboration of many stakeholders in the information and communication technology and various health sectors to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. He is also a member of the Broadband Commission, the Steering Committee of the UN Global Compact LEAD initiative and the UN ECOSOC Development Cooperation Forum. Klaus Leisinger is also Chairman of the Board of the German Network Business Ethics and board member of the German Society for the United Nations.

For his participation in UN agencies in particular those of "Information Technology in Health Care" Leisinger receives in September 2011, the South South Award. In November 2012, he was the Global Compact " Special Advisor on the post 2015 Development and Business Ethics " and appointed by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network ( Director Prof. Jeffrey Sachs, Earth Institute, Columbia University, New York) member of the " Leadership Council ". For his "outstanding Contributions" in the fight against leprosy, he was on the 4th of December 2012 the 2012 Republic of Korea Hansen Grand Award.

Science / Research

His academic research and practice, he has devoted the issues of corporate social responsibility in developing countries, business ethics, international development cooperation, as well as the supply of poor people with drugs. The focus of his work in recent years focused on the sustainable implementation of the UN Global Compact in corporate practice and the special theme "Human Rights and Business".

He is a member of the Board of the German Society for the United Nations.
