Klaus Zumwinkel

Zumwinkel (* December 15, 1943 in Rheinberg, Rhine Province ) is a German management consultant and president of the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA ), whose sole shareholder is the German Post Foundation, in which he is a member of the board. Zumwinkel was from 1990 to late 1994, manager of the German Federal Post Office and from 1995 to 2008 CEO of Deutsche Post AG.

Background and education

Zumwinkel was in Rheinberg (then circle Moers, Rhine Province, today the district of Wesel, North Rhine -Westphalia) born on the Lower Rhine, the second son of a family of entrepreneurs and grew up in Kamp- Lintfort, where his father was a due to the regulation on the use of Jewish Property had acquired a Jewish clothing store. Career

After the death of his father Zumwinkel took over with his older brother Hartwig (February 13, 1935 - November 24, 2010 ) the management of the parent trading company. This was sold in 1971 to Rewe and included then ten department stores and discounters fifty stores. So he acquired a considerable fortune before his first salaried jobs.

In the years 1974 to 1984, he worked at McKinsey, from 1979 as a partner and member of the German management, most recently since 1984 as a senior partner and member of the Global Executive Committee.

In 1985 he left the company and took over the position of CEO at the mail order company Quelle, where he had been employed as a consultant since 1984.

Five years later he was appointed shortly after the first postal reform to the Director of the German Federal Post Office. Since the establishment of joint-stock company in 1995, he was until his resignation in 2008 their CEO and thus last the longest-serving chairman of a DAX company, which was not approved for fiscal year 2008. Criminal proceedings

Discussion about pension rights and bonus payments

In early March 2009 it was announced that Klaus Zumwinkel over 20 million euros from Deutsche Post had to withdraw his pension claims as lump-sum option.
