Kleine Donau (Ilm)

The Little Danube in Vohburg

The Little Danube is a watercourse in Vohburg in Bavaria. Previously, the Little Danube was a smaller, southern arm of the Danube. They surrounded the castle hill, which was thus as an island in the Danube. Today it is produced in the southern outskirts of Vohburg from the confluence of the creek with the wave Ilm- flood channel. The Ilm is split at the so-called " lock " into three arms (see Ilm ). The right arm is still called Ilm and flows with the residual flow direction Oberwöhr / Muenchsmuenster. The middle arm leads to Neumühlestrasse where it joins with the left arm ( the Ilm- flood channel). After a few hundred meters this channel combined with the wave stream to the Little Danube. The Little Danube flowed originally below Vohburg, opposite Dünzing into the Danube. For reasons of flood protection the mouth was repeatedly moved downriver. It opens today just before the bridge over the Danube in Pförring

Special

Since floods of Ilm ( Aben ) over the division weir at the Neumühlestrasse are almost completely discharged into the Little Danube, it comes in this to fluctuating water levels. Accordingly quickly the water level rises after prolonged rainfall or snowmelt. For this reason, have been made in recent years, flood protection measures in the future, largely to protect the residents of the city against floods.
