The river led to the increase of the brown coal open cast mine in the western part of Lower Lusatia up in the 1960s flood, so he flooded the downtown church grove over several winters. For this reason a Umfluter around the inner city parishes grove was created from 1969 to 1971. Even during the flood situation 2010, the lowland between church grove and the adjacent Lichtena stood a large area under water.

In May 2007, the Nature Conservation Fund Brandenburg began in a project with the restoration of the lower reaches of the Little Elster between Bad Liebenswerda and Doberlug -Kirchhain. These natural old river arms were reactivated. The aim was next to the landscape transformation mainly to reduce the flow rate of the river to keep the water longer in the region. The project with a total cost of 1,768,568 euros is regarded as exemplary in the region in order to improve the surface water situation. In April 2008, the project in the Magpie Natoureum Maas village was presented to the public.
